What Really Motivates Me To Write
(And Why It Matters for You Too)
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. Long before I got paid for it. Long before I knew what “content marketing” even meant.
That’s how I know my motivation goes deeper than recognition or money. Writing has always been part of who I am.
And if you’re reading this, chances are you feel the same.
So what keeps me coming back to the page — day after day, year after year?
Here are the big reasons that drive me to write , and how they might resonate with you too.
1. Because I Have to Write
For me, writing feels as natural as breathing. I talk a lot (my wife would say too much).
My brain is constantly fizzing with ideas, and writing is the outlet that helps me get them out. It’s not optional — it’s a compulsion.
2. Writing Brings Me Clarity
Writing helps me make sense of the world, and when I see a depressing news report, or have to deal with something stressful — or something inspires me - writing is like my therapy.
It orders my thoughts and connects dots I didn’t see before. It gives meaning to experiences I might otherwise overlook.
3. I Want to Leave Something Behind
Perhaps it’s ego, but I really do want to create work that means something.
In this context, your writing can outlast you. If, a hundred years from now, someone stumbles across something I wrote — and it makes them think differently, laugh, or feel inspired — then I’ve left my mark.
This notion inspires me and always has.
4. Writing Pays My Mortgage
I’ve been a copywriter for 25 years. I’ve got a mortgage, a lovely wife and three children. Writing for clients is a different discipline to writing for my side projects — yet I have to make money (from both).
However you feel about money, it’s still a powerful motivator — because words can create real value for people and generate income. Learning to “write with a business hat on” has been life-changing.
5. There’s Pride in Saying “I’m a Writer”
Here’s my ego again, but there’s definitely something special about telling people, “I’m a writer.” It carries a certain status, because so many people want to write, but never do.
Sure, personal pride is involved, yet it’s also about identity. Writing is part of who I am — and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
6. I Genuinely Like Helping Other People
I know it’s cringeworthy but in my case it’s true. When something I’ve written teaches, inspires, or helps someone take action — that’s the best feeling in the world.
Yes, I write for myself. But I also write for you.
Your Turn
Grab a real piece of paper and a pen. Write down five things that motivate you to write.
Stick that list on the wall above your desk. Look at it every time you feel like quitting. Those reasons matter more than you realise.
