Two Hours Bodyboarding in the North Sea
(And What It Taught Me About Writing Online)
If you'd told me in July, sweltering under the East Anglian sun, that I'd spend Christmas Day bodyboarding in the freezing North Sea - I would’ve laughed in your face.
But that’s exactly what happened.
There we were: me, my wife, and a couple of brave friends, fully suited and booted in 5mm wetsuits, neoprene gloves, boots, and balaclavas.
Standing on the beautiful beach of Lunan Bay near Arbroath in Angus, Scotland - sun shining, wind sharp - we plunged into the icy surf and stayed there for nearly two hours.
Was it freezing? Absolutely.
But was it worth it? Without question.
The cold became bearable soon after we caught our first wave and the water in our suits heated up. Only the tips of our fingers and toes never quite followed suit.
We were completely in the moment. It was wild and unexpected, a mixture of pure joy and excitement.
A moment that seemed impossible just months earlier had somehow become reality.
Afterwards we peeled off our soaking wetsuits (which was harder than catching the waves), then dried off - laughing at how insane the whole thing had been.
Two hours in near-freezing water on Christmas Day. I definitely couldn’t have imagined it back in the summer.
And yet - we did it.
That shift - from “no way” to “I’m doing this” - got me thinking about writing online.
Unexpected breakthroughs often follow consistent effort.
You don’t always see the progress while you’re paddling, but one day you look up and realise you’re riding the wave.
You might be staring at a blank screen right now, wondering if any of this will work. You might be battling that voice that says, “What’s the point?”
But keep going.
Write every day, even when it feels cold. Especially when it feels cold.
Because somewhere ahead of you, in a version of your future you will into existence - you’re in the water, the sun’s out, and you’re doing something that once felt impossible.
Set goals. Visualise where you want to be. Then put in the reps.
You’ll get there.
