The Night I Became a Fish & Chip Legend (Sort Of)
From Kitchen Disaster To Content Champion
My wife says I can’t cook.
Not in a jokey, “haha this tastes weird” way—more like a hard truth handed down from years of culinary catastrophes.
Burnt sausages. Pasta that somehow sticks and crunches. BBQ chicken my kids still laugh at me for (that one genuinely hurts).
So on Valentine’s Day, when I announced I’d cook us the perfect fish and chips—with mushy peas no less—I was met with silence.
The kind of silence that says: I’m mentally prepping a pizza delivery backup.
But somehow the planets aligned, and something very strange happened that evening.
It's still the stuff of James Family folklore...
The beer batter came out golden and crisp, crackling as it hit the oil. The cod steamed inside—light, fluffy, actually cooked all the way through.
My chips were glorious: crispy on the outside, soft in the centre. And the mushy peas? Out of this world. Fresh mint, a hint of lemon, and just the right texture.
Even the plating looked halfway professional. Gordon Ramsay would have given me a job (probably).
Anyway, my wife took one bite, looked at me in disbelief and said:
“This is incredible. Who are you?”
That night, I wasn’t a burnt-toast kind of bloke. I was a legend in my own kitchen.
