The Key To Having A Writer's Mindset
Just one simple thing will set you apart
I Used to Trick Myself Into Thinking I Was Writing
There were times — weeks even — when I convinced myself I was “working on my writing.”
But I really wasn’t.
I was researching, testing tools and fiddling about with things.
Mornings spent scrolling Medium, or watching YouTube breakdowns of how to start a profitable writing business.
I was binge-learning about writing, while not actually writing.
And I’ve been a professional copywriter for over 25 years.
Even I fell into the trap (and still sometimes do).
It’s Easy to Pretend You’re Doing the Work
You fixate on the next promising AI writing tool. “This will finally streamline my process!”
I did this with Type.ai and Lex, both great writing platforms that genuinely help with research, outlining, and writing assistance.
But at some point, I had to admit I was using these tools as a distraction.
Because the truth is — the only way to become a writer and keep going as one — is to write.
Write Every Weekday — That’s the Habit
This is why I started Weekday Writer. It’s not just a newsletter, it’s a philosophy.
Write for 30–60 minutes every Monday to Friday. Just showing up and putting words on the page.
That’s it. That’s the mindset shift.
It’s also what separates dreamers from doers. Because the only way to develop a writer’s mindset is to consistently act like a writer.
Not exactly fake it until you make it, but — you get the idea.
You Don’t Need to Write All Day (And You Shouldn’t)
I’m a dad, husband and business owner. I don’t want to write all weekend and miss out on real life.
So I don’t. I’ve built a habit that respects both my writing and my family. Client work gets done, yes — but it’s weekday writing that fuels my creative progress.
Because if you don’t live your life, you’ll have nothing real to write about.
And by the way — there’s nothing stopping you spending a weekend or two creating Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) — just not all of the time.
Stop Looking for the Magic Tool. You’re It.
There’s no course, app, AI prompt, or productivity hack that replaces putting your fingers on the keyboard.
Shiny objects are seductive, but most of them are just delays dressed up as progress.
The writer’s mindset is forged in repetition. It’s built through writing reps.
