“So You’re a... Copyright Lawyer?”
Adventures of a Misunderstood Copywriter
It happened in a pub, of all places.
My father-in-law had kindly arranged a meeting with a local business owner—he thought I could help the guy out with “something to do with websites.”
Pint in hand, I launched into my usual, polite intro. “I’m a copywriter.”
The businessman nodded, confused. “Right... I don’t think we’ll be having any copyright issues though.”
I smiled. Tight-lipped. Realising he thought I was a lawyer.
So I tried again: “I write the actual words. The stuff that persuades people to take action.”
Another pause.
And that’s when it hit me: no one knew what I actually did.
We exchanged a few awkward pleasantries. Then quickly drained our drinks and made our excuses.
When No One Gets What You Do
Ever tried explaining your online business to family or friends?
It’s like describing a dream you barely remember. The more you talk, the worse it sounds. You fumble over the words. You see their eyes glaze over.
You feel like a fraud. Like you should’ve done something easier to explain—like being an accountant.
And worse...a small voice inside agrees with them.
“Maybe this is all a bit silly.”
“Maybe I’m not actually building anything.”
That voice is brutal. Especially when results are thin and self-belief is thinner.
The Moment You Start Owning It
Looking back, that pub moment wasn’t their fault.
It was mine.
Because I wasn’t clear. I didn’t own what I did. I didn’t stand tall and say:
“I’m a writer. I write words that persuade your customers to buy your products and services.”
Instead, I whispered around the truth—like I was apologising for having a dream.
But clarity isn’t just a messaging problem. It’s a mindset problem.
You have to decide, deep down, that this matters. That this is your work. That you're allowed to be proud of it—even when it's still messy.
Because when you believe it, others start to as well.
Ready to Stop Feeling Like a Secret?
That’s why I send out the Weekday Writer newsletter.
It’s for people like you building something real—who just want to write daily, get better, and finally feel confident telling others, “This is what I do.”
Each issue helps you create, publish, and grow—with a simple writing system you can actually stick to.
No more awkward silences. Just quiet confidence, built one article at a time.
Let’s make it easier to say, “I’m a writer.”
And actually believe it.
