I’ve Been Drumming Since I Was 11
And it taught me everything I know about writing online
When I was at secondary school I was the drummer in a band called 'Gyrate'.
Weird name I know - inspired by an epic Eat song of the same name:
We used to practice in the local village hall, at school and for a short time in the vicar's front room (his son was our lead guitarist for a while).
When I first started drumming I had no idea what I was doing. But I had a natural flair for it and practised everyday.
And before long I was hooked.
From the first time I sat behind a kit and it all clicked, I was always drumming.
Through my teens, through my twenties, at sweaty pub gigs, village halls and school leavers' parties.
In between, I’d bash away on my cheap Beverley acoustic set in my parents’ garage. Then later on a slightly better but still second hand Premier kit that rattled your ear drums.
These days? I’ve gone all fancy with a Roland TD-17 V-Drum setup for silent practice, because I value my hearing and can turn it down.
Rock and roll!
But here’s the thing: although I've never stopped playing, somewhere along the way I did stop learning.
Like many self-taught creatives, I hit a plateau. Developed a few bad habits. I could keep time, sure—but was I improving? Not really.
So recently, I went back to basics.
I’m working through the Rock & Pop drum grades again, plus rudiments, sticking exercises and tempo drills.
Just ten minutes a day, headphones in, metronome on.
And oddly enough, it’s never felt better.
Rhythm Beats Intensity
As creators, we often get caught in the trap of volume.
Big goals, big content and big launches.
But drumming taught me something simple:
You don’t get better by playing louder.
You get better by playing consistently.
The best drummers in the world don’t just wing it—they practice daily. The same rudiments and grooves, over and over until they’re tight.
That’s what weekday writing is.
Not heroic bursts of content once a month.
But short, regular sessions.
Daily reps.
Consistent rhythm.
Because when you hit that groove, writing becomes music.
