Don't Sell Your Future Self Short
By Not Committing as a Writer
My Medium friends can read this over there as well.
The Year That Changes Everything
A year from now, you could look back with pride — or regret.
When I finally committed to showing up on Substack and Medium every week, I knew the stakes.
If I didn’t follow through, the only person I’d be letting down was myself.
Because the truth is simple:
If you want to grow as a writer, build an audience, and earn from your words, there’s no shortcut.
Consistency is the compound interest of creativity.
Your Future Self Is Counting on You
Think about where you’ll be in twelve months if you don’t commit.
Other writers will have more followers and engagement — and will have honed their craft.
They’ll be reaping the rewards of simply sticking with it.
And you?
Still on the sidelines — knowing you could have been there too.
Three Ways to “Sell It Forward” as a Writer
Here’s how to invest in your future self today:
1. Pick One Platform & Commit
Whether it’s Substack or Medium, show up at least once a week. One audience, channel, and focus — with repurposing if you have time. I publish the same weekday article on both, with Substack as the main growth engine.
2. Set Micro Goals
Don’t aim for 10,000 subscribers — aim to publish five short articles every week, with one Note every weekday. Build small wins into big momentum.
3. Find Your Why
Are you writing to grow a business? Build authority? Leave a mark? Write it down. When motivation dips, your why will keep you going.
The Only Person You’ll Shortchange Is You
Your future readers want you to commit.
Those ideas you have deserve to be shared.
Your future self is waiting for you to start.
So show up, write and publish. You know you can do it.
Because a year from now, you’ll either be a writer with an audience —
or someone wishing they’d started sooner.
