Loz James: I'm Loz James, and this is the Content Champion Podcast, the content marketing and SEO show where you can learn actionable techniques from real world examples. Hi, guys. Welcome to the show. This is the second SEO essentials podcast, talking about the foundational elements of SEO. I'm with Tom Peary, a head of SEO here at Content Champion, and related to the last show about canonicalization, we're now talking about duplicate content. Tom, could you explain to us what duplicate content is, on both our own sites and on the web?Tom Peary: Yeah, sure. Let's start with our own sites to begin with, because it ties in nicely with the last podcast. Looking at your site for duplicate content is really important, as we said before, just because it can really hold you back in terms of your organic rankings. Too much duplicate content ... A little bit's okay, the odd fodder thing, menu items, Google understands that, but duplicate content across your site is going to impact poorly on your organic rankings, because Google sees you haven't taken much effort, that it's just filled with the same stuff. How relevant to that is a user? It can't differentiate different pages, because it has the same content. So that's the first thing. The other one, which can be ... usually, it's out of your control, initially anyway, is external content that's been lifted, effectively. So if a site has been lazy, and they've just taken all your site content, or huge chunks of it, which we see all the time, it's really common, especially in the black hat world, which is not as abundant as it was, but certainly where somebody sees what your site has done to rank and just copies huge chunks of content, especially if it's very detailed content on somet...]]>

Loz James: I'm Loz James, and this is the Content Champion podcast, the content, marketing, and SEO show where you can learn actionable techniques from real world examples. Hi guys, welcome to the show. This is our first SEO Essentials programme. We're going to be talking ... Me and Tom Peary, our head of SEO here, are going to be talking about those foundational elements of SEO on-page, technical, everything related to that, that you need to get in order before you do your in house SEO or content marketing, or start to use the services of a company like Content Champion. So, this time, we're going to be talking about canonicalization, and, look, me and Tom have got about 30 years SEO and content marketing between us, so you're in safe hands. Let's introduce Tom. Hi, Tom.Tom Peary: Hi, Loz.Loz James: So, what is canonicalization?Tom Peary: OK, so a canonical tag is really just a way of telling a search engine about a page on your website. If you've got a piece on content on a page that is then duplicated elsewhere, the rel=canonical tag just, literally, shows Google, this is the main page, this is the master URL, we're not intentionally trying to duplicate content across the site. That way, it just sorts out any problems with duplicate content.Loz James: Okay. Can you give us some examples of what that looks like on a small business site?Tom Peary: Yeah, sure. I think one of the easiest ways is, if you take, for example, the www. extension on your domain. You don't have to have that as your domain set up. You'll see many sites where it's just http then the domain,]]>

I'm Loz James, and this is the Content Champion podcast, the content marketing and SEO show where you can learn actionable techniques from real world examples.Hi guys. Welcome to episode 70 of the Content Champion podcast. This is the first in the SEO essential series, where we're looking at key SEO tasks to help get your site in order before spending any more time or money on long term SEO that won't necessarily work if you haven't put these foundational aspects of your site in place. So, this could also really be called the Content Champion housekeeping podcast, because I haven't done one of these shows for quite some time. We've been busy working on a new eCommerce site with my business partner, and a lot of client work at the moment. And really, I've got a couple of things to clear up as a way of introducing the next sort of episodes of the show that will come after this. So, firstly, I just want to talk about what a great pleasure it was for me personally to interview Yaro Starak on the last episode of the podcast. That for me really marked a sea change, if you like, a perfect place to draw a line under the existing interview series that I'd done. I'd done nearly 70 of those, and getting Yaro on the show was such a highlight, it seemed a good point for me to really segue over into different styles of show that would help our target audience more and our listeners more. So, I will be going back to doing some of those interviews with top SEOs and content marketers in the future, but for the time being, what we're gonna focus on for our core audience of independent online business owners and retailers, eCommerce store owners, is really those key SEO tasks that can really help you to get your house in order, as I say, before you go and employ a company like Content Champion to help with your SEO and content marketing or any other agency, or do your content marketing and SEO in house, because what we've seen is the same things come up over and over again.]]>

Having started his career as a print journalist - for which he won several awards - Christian began to see that the newspaper industry would be in trouble unless it started to embrace new content marketing models of publication and monetization - which it didn't necessarily have to do by appealing to a tabloid based readership.
With industry-leading movie reviewing expertise under his belt, and acknowledging that content marketing was to play an important role in his future, Christian decided to branch out on his own - starting the Hollywood in Toto website with the aim of providing high quality journalistic writing, meaty film reviews and no fluff interviews.Being first and foremost a writer and journalist, Christian found the transition from traditional print media to its digital counterpart presented certain unique challenges - challenges which he has adapted to and overcome as HiT has become increasingly successful under his management. In this episode, Christian shares his fascinating journey with us - and gives some valuable advice on how to create and promote content for news focused websites, and how to build your own distinctive brand while still competing with the larger news-based publishers online.

Second, we'll look at some keyword research. Third, we'll consider the social media aspect of social sharing and the buzz that's generated by some of the content in the market place. Then number four, we're going to look at the market size of the yoga niche for 2016.In part five, I'm looking at some of the types of products that are selling really well in the niche that I can also sell through my blog. Number six, we're going to look at some of the competition - which could be a bit daunting as some of the existing authority sites I found in the sector were amazing (but competition's always a good thing of course). In stage seven, I'll have a look at some of the content on those sites and consider exactly what they're doing. Have they got email lists? What type of content are they publishing on their sites and on their social media communities and things like that - just to see what we're up against. Then number eight, in extension to that, I'm going to look at what I'm going to do to approach the yoga niche and how I'm going to set up my site and some general rules behind that. Then in the next episode of the Ace project, we're going to have a look at the site setup and some of the initial content that we're already creating to go onto the new site.

1. My Personal Reasons For Choosing The Yoga NicheYou don't necessarily need to be passionate about your niche, and you don't need to be personally interested in it to make money from an authority site within that sector. But I do think it helps. I'm going to actually be the face of this new site, and there's a bit of a personal story behind it...My wife's been doing yoga for about eleven years now and she swears by it. She's perhaps representative of someone who gets all the health and fitness benefits of yoga - and as such represents the ideal avatar in the marketplace. She does it for increased flexibility, she does it in alignment with other exercises like running and swimming, and she does it for general health reasons. She ties it in with diet expectations as well and how that reflects upon what she eats.]]>

However, Robert honed his copywriting and content marketing skills, and soon moved sideways into digitally focused marketing work - securing a job with forward-thinking software firm MaxCDN - the successful content delivery network.
When Robert joined the MaxCDN team, it's fair to say the content they had produced so far was not delivering the results they needed. So armed with monthly revenue goals and a more strategic approach to creating and promoting high quality content - Robert and his team got to work.Fast forward two years, and Robert's new approach - what he calls being in 'strategic mode' rather than just regularly pumping out lower quality content - meant that traffic and subscribers on the MaxCDN blog have increased by a factor of five. Listen To Tom's Show
Tom's Backstory
Tom's journey to online marketing success started in a roundabout kind of way when he and a friend went to a fancy dress party wearing female leggings - which they discovered were actually really comfortable. So they came up with the idea to sell a male version of leggings, or 'meggings' - as a natural progression of the skinny jean. The venture started out with Tom and his two business partners buying a batch of female leggings, branding them as male ones and trying to sell them on London's Brick Lane. Unfortunately, however, they sold zero pairs.Ever resourceful, this didn't put Tom off - and a couple of months later he set up an e-commerce store and went on to sell the very first pair of male leggings online. It was the power and potential of this first online sale that encouraged Tom to really get started in online marketing. That was all back in 2013, and since then Tom has setup numerous online ventures after leaving the corporate world and devoting himself full-time to building Internet based businesses. Within this context, Tom went on to found Virtual Valley in 2015, a platform that quickly and easily connects entrepreneurs with awesome virtual assistants. The company has exclusively used low cost content marketing techniques to build a strong client base since the start of 2016.
And it's the content collaboration and outreach processes that Tom uses to build such online authority that we're discussing in this fascinating show.

Will Hoekenga is one of those writers you're always pleased to hear from when their latest email drops into your inbox. His copy is consistently intelligent, engaging and entertaining - and when you also consider he cut his teeth on the Leadpages marketing team - you'll know why I was so excited to be able to 'pick his brain' on my latest show.
To help non copywriters create more needs-focused copy, Will has developed a simple five point framework we can all use to create more engagement and drive better results with our copywriting.
So for half an hour during this episode, we discuss how he came up with the idea, what these specific five stages are - and how this whole framework can help us.
Will was very generous with his time for this call, and I guarantee that what he has to say will change the way you look at and create your copy in future.

An accomplished and internationally recognised digital marketer, marketing consultant and public speaker, Daniel is a self-confessed retargeting nerd who mastered his craft over many years after becoming disillusioned with the poor quality of information already available on the subject.
The result is a repeatable Facebook retargeting technique so powerful, it achieved an ROI of 7,425% for one of his clients, and created massive conversion increases for many other satisfied consulting customers – who sell products and services across a wide range of sectors.
I first heard about Daniel and his work when he started leaving really genuine and positive comments about this podcast on the Content Champion blog – and he instantly struck me as ‘one of the good guys'. Almost two years later he's still supporting the show – so it was a pleasure when he agreed to be my latest guest.

Listen to the podcast

Danny Flood has fought in Thai boxing matches in Bangkok (respect), rafted down the Amazon and climbed many of South America's highest mountains. He's sailed across the South China Sea and crossed most of Southeast Asia on a motorbike. He's trekked through jungles and abseiled down huge waterfalls.
In short, he's an action man – but more importantly from our point of view, he's also a highly adept entrepreneur and content marketer – and has achieved all the above whilst running three location-independent businesses, including the wildly successful OpenWorld Magazine. In his last four years of country-hopping, Danny has also consulted for companies in Brazil, the US and Argentina – all the while falling back on his secret weapon to build online brands and sales.
Danny's secret weapon is email outreach, and in his new book ‘Hack Email, Connect With Anyone, Build Your Business and Brand, Become an Unstoppable Force' – he shares some of the key ways he uses email outreach tactics to grow his businesses while living life with just a backpack and a can-do attitude.
Luckily for us, this real life Indianna Jones made some time in his busy schedule to share many of these killer techniques with us, and the result is an information packed podcast that covers almost as much ground as Danny himself.
In this half hour show we discuss:

* Danny's backstory and why he got the traveling bug
* Which countries he's been too and some of his key travel highlights
* Why relationship building is crucial for success in any business
* The email outreach mistakes we should always avoid
* What awesome email outreach looks like and how we can achieve it
* Essential tools you can use to make the whole process easier
* An introduction to the Streak app for Gmail
* How to find and connect with the right people every time
* The habitual side of conducting effective email outreach
* Where we can find Danny online and buy his excellent books

Listen to the podcast

It's fair to say that keen sailor, former cognitive therapist and successful online entrepreneur, Rob Woodgate, is an accomplished man.
Deciding to leave behind a high-paying corporate career to start his own business, Rob ultimately found himself gravitating towards online marketing – and this is when his programming skills developed as a boy really came to the fore.
Fast forward a few years and with several self-help products and membership sites under his belt, Rob branched out into developing a piece of email marketing software that he needed to help automate list building tasks in his own business – and the result of his hard work was AWtomator, the subject of today's show.
An ingenious email marketing automation addon for AWeber – it turns the latter into a Swiss army knife by using easy-to-use ‘events' to trigger various actions and segment your lists. In short, it gives AWeber advanced behavioural dynamic marketing powers – without the entreprise level price tag.
At the time of writing, I've been using AWtomator for just under three months, and the results have been incredible. My lists are more organised, more responsive and growing faster.
So I was delighted when Rob agreed to come on the show and tell us all about his creation – and what it can do for our online businesses.
In this fascinating show we discuss:

* Rob's backstory (including his love of sailing) and how he became an online entrepreneur
* Why segmenting your email lists is essential for online success
* Real world examples of how segmenting can help your business
* How big name marketers are using behavioural dynamics to make a killing
* The scope of AWtomator's features and what it's capable of
* The four main event triggers that are central to the software
* Rob's innovative model for creating simple dynamic campaigns (including an introduction to the ‘spacer' email)
* How AWtomator can help counter reader burnout on your lists
* How affiliate marketers can use AWtomator to cloak links (and more)

Plus! The PS Question! Rob gives us a great tip for using AWtomator in a unique way to find out what our prospects really want!

SEO professional Nick Eubanks of the superb blog ‘SEO Nick' – about how he generated over 100,000 monthly visitors to a new site in just 9 months, (yes you did read that correctly).

Listen to the podcast

Nick Eubanks is one of those people who strikes you as having a keen, intelligent mind from the first few minutes of talking to him. In terms of SEO, this means he's bubbling over with amazing ideas and thankfully for us – also means his SEO Nick blog is full of incredible posts like the one we're discussing in today's episode.
I can't remember exactly how I first found Nick's blog, but like its author it made an instant impression – and one post in particular just knocked me sideways – detailing as it did Nick's achievement in getting over 100,000 organic monthly visitors to a brand new site in just a few months.
As if that wasn't impressive enough, the post also highlighted the fact that Nick and his team then replicated this success with another site. You read that correctly too…
Now granted, this was an enterprise level project with huge resources behind it – but as Nick himself points out, it's the process that's repeatable from one site to the next provided your niche can sustain it – and this makes the achievement even greater.
So having read the post three times in a row, I just had to invite Nick to be my guest on the show to talk about it – and luckily for us he agreed.
In this fascinating episode we cover:

* Nick's backstory and how he got started in the SEO game
* The context of the project and what challenges Nick faced
* The three central tenets of the process
* How Nick used advanced keyword modelling at the start of the project
* How on-page elements were tested for success

In this episode, it's my honour to be speaking with ‘the' Rand Fishkin of Moz.com and Inbound.org fame – about how to measure the success of our content marketing campaigns. Trust me,
Listen to the podcast

It's hard to know where to start with the superlatives when it comes to Rand Fishkin. We all know he's a highly successful Internet entrepreneur, blogger, author, podcaster and speaker – and a master of all things content, search and social.
But for me he's also one of the first people I started to follow online – over ten years ago infact when I was a newbie copywriter.
Back then I read just a few blogs, including SEOMoz as it was then and Copyblogger too – so to host Rand on the show is a bit like inviting royalty round for tea (and then actually having them turn up).
Rand is a really down to earth guy and his expertise in this field is second to none, so I tried to cover as much ground as possible in our half hour chat. The result is a podcast that I know you'll gain a great deal of value from.
During the course of the show we covered the following fascinating topics:

* How Rand got started online and the history behind Moz
* The reasons why content marketing definitely does work and can be measured
* Problems with the ‘content-click-conversion' model and what we should be measuring instead
* How to attribute a value to the various content touchpoints on the way to a conversion
* The importance of building online trust and authority at the various stages of your funnel
* Why you can't measure what you don't have: Rand's top traffic tactics
* How to get buy in from the C-Suite so you can report the metrics that matter
* Which analytics tools to use in measuring our success
* How to connect with Rand on his blog and social media

In 2014, Mark coined the term ‘content shock' to describe the saturation point in content production that was being reached as content marketing grew in popularity.
His article on the subject caused a fair few waves across the marketing community – because everyone knew he was right. Marketers were becoming genuinely worried about getting their messages heard through the deluge of online content pumped out everyday.
One year on, Mark has revisited the theme – and this time he's come up with a solution to content shock, called ‘content ignition' – and his take on this is something every marketer should hear.
With a book on the subject coming out soon – entitled ‘The Content Code' – Mark took the time to outline his ‘antidote to content shock' in this fascinating half hour show.
Our discussion covered the following subjects:

* Mark's backstory and how he got started in the industry
* The definition of content shock and how it applies to content marketing
* Whether content marketing still works – or has it already peaked?
* An introduction to content ignition and how it can make your content marketing more successful
* Practical ways to ignite our content from Mark's new book
* The importance of trust in content marketing

With over 20 years’ experience in digital communication strategy across the UK, Europe and the Middle East, Steve has worked with both global brands and SMEs and is now based in Amsterdam, where he’s a freelance digital and communication consultant and is a visiting lecturer at the Willem de Kooning Academie. He’s also lectured at Syracuse, Dept. of Innovation & Entrepreneurship in New York.
With a marketing professional of Steve's calibre on the show, I thought it would be a great idea to dig down into what's gone wrong for a lot of brands involved in storytelling.
We'll also consider how Steve's storylining and GAME strategies can help remedy the communication problems that cause many organisations to conclude that content marketing doesn't work.
In this fascinating 25 minute call, we cover a lot of ground – including:

* Steve's backstory and his previous life as a professional musician
* Why a lot of companies are getting their storytelling wrong
* Some alarming stats which show content marketing isn't working for everyone
* The basis of storylining, and how it can solve many brand storytelling problems
* Why your business should be using the GAME technique to improve your marketing communications

You may remember last year I talked with Brian Dean of Backlinko about the same topic – and you loved that episode – so as it's a subject popular with many people (including myself) I thought it would be great to look at how things have moved on and what strategies are working in this space right now.
Gael uses some of Brian's strategies to build content for his authority sites, so there's a lot of symmetry between their approaches – but also quite a few ingenious additions to the process that I know you'll love.
As with Brian's podcast last year, there's so much valuable information packed into this call that you could take notes and start your own authority site business right after listening. (I resisted the urge to charge for this too, as Gael's answers are better than many premium courses I've paid for).
Gael was very generous with his time for this show, and for 35 minutes we discussed these main questions:

* How Gael got started online and why he set up Authority Hacker
* How he earns $20k a month from his authority sites
* What's changed in the SEO and online environment to make this model even more attractive than ever before
* How to choose the right niche to make money in
* Tips on choosing the right domain and web hosting
* How keyword research factors into your authority site building
* How to create truly high quality content using one of Brian Dean's favourite techniques
* Sourcing top standard writers to both create and share content (and what you'll expect to pay)
* Gael's advice on the ‘how often to post' question
* How to monetize your sites using a really ingenious strategy
* Why content upgrades are essential to the success of your content

* Gael's top three ways to promote your content
* Mistakes to avoid and how to ‘pivot' when things aren't working

This time, I'm delighted to be chatting about brand storytelling with Michael Brenner, Head of Strategy at content marketing software firm NewsCred.
Listen to the brand storytelling podcast

Michael has over twenty years' experience in sales, marketing and leadership roles, and it was his recent posts on the ‘content marketing imperative' and ‘betting his future career on content marketing' that really caught my attention.
Michael believes that if your business doesn't start using inbound and content marketing techniques sooner rather than later – you'll simply get left behind using archaic interruption marketing and outsourced advertising methods that have an inferior ROI.
We discuss these issues in this fascinating podcast, as well as some wider industry themes, and also consider how the NewsCred content marketing platform can help.
Subjects covered in this half hour chat include:

* Michael's own backstory, leading to his role today at NewsCred
* What the content marketing imperative is and why he bet his future career on it
* What's wrong with traditional methods of marketing
* Why you need to become a brand storyteller and publisher
* What types of content best communicate these stories to our customers
* How to promote your content for the best results
* How to drive action and how Michael uses calls to action
* The myth that content marketing is only for big brands
* Why content marketing can work in all industry sectors
* How to measure the ROI of your content marketing efforts (Michael's 3 step answer here is gold dust!)
* How long we should keep going with our content marketing before seeing results
* Michael's advice on the ‘how often should we post' conundrum
* How NewsCred can assist with our content marketing campaigns
* The future of content marketing: what will happen to businesses that don't embrace it
* Details of Michael's personal blog and Twitter account so we can ask him anything we like

Plus! The PS Question! Michael exclusively gives away the ‘Brand Map Framework' he uses at NewsCred.

I've got so much respect for what Steve has achieved, not least because his results with content marketing prove this can work in any niche. Steve himself points out that he's selling appliances – which may not at first sight seem interesting enough to blog about – but in capturing his customers' excitement preceding and at the point of purchase, he's been able to tap into why people buy from him and build the Yale blog around that.
Central to the resulting content strategy is the creation of buying guides for certain types of products, which are used as calls to action on relevant blog posts. Steve then segments customers into email lists with different interests, and nurtures them based on this to the point of sale (and beyond).
So if you're a small business or SME owner and you're wondering if inbound marketing techniques can really work in your sector – you must listen to this podcast.
Topics covered this time include:

* The backstory of Steve's business, and what sets Yale apart
* Steve's inbound success in terms of visitor numbers and sales
* What helped to turn his stagnant blog into an inbound powerhouse
* The difference between blogging and business blogging
* Understanding your customers and how they buy from you
* SEO and content creation strategies
* How Steve promotes his posts (or doesn't)
* How Steve uses buying guides to attract leads
* Why email nurturing is a key part of Yale's strategy
* Why any business should be able to use content marketing
* The reasons why your business must develop an inbound culture
* Why you're wasting your money on advertising

Plus! The PS Question! Listen right to the end because Steve's answer here is just great!
